Case Study: Hip Joint Ball CoCr

HipHip Joint replacements are becoming more and more popular in today’s world. The human hip consists of a ball and a socket joint that can wear out during a person’s lifetime. The aim of a total hip replacement is to save a patient’s normal hip function and to reduce the risk of dislocation. Furthermore, one main goal is to preserve as much bone as possible as well as to make sure the implant is long-lasting.

Modern hip joint implants are made out of tough Cobalt Chrome (CoCr) alloys or brittle hard materials like ceramics. Meister Abrasives offers a solution for the grinding of such materials with its vitrified bond technology. The Meister Vitrified Micron (VM) technology offers a unique range of new generation fine grinding tools for a wide range of materials. Surface structures within nano tolerances and scratch-free, polished-like surfaces are now possible to achieve. Adjustable grit sizes, down to <1 micron, are possible.Steps - hip joints case study

Used technologies are Vit-CBN, FSK, and Vit-Diamond.

For the finishing of the cobalt chrome hip joint ball, a stable and multistep process is required to accurately grind the application.

The goal of the customer was to achieve a scratch-free, polished surface combined with a grinding time reduction and an optimal dressing interval. The machine used for the case study is a Monnier & Zahner M668 machine.
