CASE STUDY: Valve Plate Face Grinding with CBN

wheel life increased from 25k to > 1MM parts with CBN!

In this application, a customer was grinding the face of a hardened steel valve plate in high-production using a conventional aluminum oxide cup wheel, achieving an average wheel life of 10,000-25,000 parts.

The goal was to increase productivity by increasing wheel life and reducing the downtime for wheel changes. Meister’s solution was to upgrade the process with a vitrified CBN wheel, which improved wheel life dramatically, while maintaining all quality requirements.

  • original wheel spec: 600-grit aluminum oxide
  • NEW wheel spec: 325-mesh Vitrified CBN

Results Achieved

  • wheel worked immediately, with all existing feeds / speeds
  • wheel wear measured only 0.7mm after 300,000 parts ground
