CASE STUDY: Cam Grinding with Vit CBN and hDD Dressing

In this case study, a high-volume engine manufacturer was looking to reduce their tooling costs while maintaining the highest possible quality on a high-speed cam grinding application with vitrified CBN wheels. The camshafts were used in a cylinder deactivation system for engine fuel management.

After a thorough evaluation of the benchmark process, Meister introduced a new vitrified CBN wheel utilizing vitrified HPB (High Performance Bonding) and a porous hDD dresser (Hybrid Diamond Dresser).  The tools were designed to work together to achieve the sharpest and most efficient cutting possible, with minimal heat and grinding forces.  The result was in increase in wheel life of 40% while maintaining cycle time, excellent surface quality, and zero burn.
