CASE STUDY: CBN honing of canning punch

A manufacturer of Aluminum cans needed a finishing solution for their punching tools.  The challenge was to bring a turned surface to a mirror finish with a single tool on their lathe. Furthermore, the machine utilized Emulsion coolant, (not honing oil), and they did not want to introduce sulfur into the machining environment.

The engineers from Alfons Schmeier recommended their newest superfinishing technology utilizing CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) abrasive, in a vitrified bond, without sulfur treatment. This tool was able to handle the turned surface and produce a mirror finish that far exceeded the customer’s requirements.
